A bench with a bower of medicinal herbs (created by Joe Miller) honors Asheville resident Elizabeth Blackwell, remarkably the first female in the country to receive a medical degree, beginning her studies here. She founded the world’s first four-year medical college for women and established the New York Infirmary for Women and Children in 1857.
