Blue Ridge Mountains

In Asheville, daily walks with your fur baby turn into small adventures. Water bowls appear without asking. Patios make room. Trails stretch across some of the oldest mountains in the world, and nobody looks twice when your travel companion answers to “Sir Wigglebottom.”

This five-day itinerary weaves together scenic overlooks, creative districts, mountain trails, and dog-friendly patios, giving you space to explore at leash speed with plenty of stops to sit, sip, snack, and scratch behind the ears.

Day 1: Downtown Dawdles & Village Vibes

First Walk, Best Walk

After checking into a pet-friendly stay like Kimpton Hotel Arras, Aloft Asheville Downtown, or the riverside cabins at Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins, step straight into the rhythm of downtown.

Begin in Pack Square Park, where open green space makes for the perfect first stretch of the trip. From there, follow Asheville’s Urban Trail, a self-guided walking route marked by sculptures and plaques that quietly reveal the city’s creative spirit. It’s part art walk, part history lesson, part sniff safari.

Patio Time

For lunch, settle into the outdoor seating at Botiwalla for authentic Indian street food, where dogs are welcome on the patio, and you can drink in the city atmosphere while sipping on a Lime Rickey or Mango Lassi. If you’re craving something a little sparkly, the patio at Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar offers shade, books, water bowls and breezy conversation.

Off-Leash Energy

In the afternoon, head to Wagbar, Weaverville's off-leash dog park meets neighborhood bar. Tennis balls fly. New friendships form. Your dog becomes briefly famous.

Biltmore Village Dinner

As evening settles in, stroll through Biltmore Village and grab dinner at Hillman Beer, where the outdoor space is roomy and welcoming to pups. Your only job will be keeping them off the table when they smell your burger. For Mediterranean comfort, the patio at Jerusalem Garden Café is another relaxed option.

Day 2: The Blue Ridge Barkway & South Slope Sips

Coffee Before the Climb

Start the morning at Rowan West Coffee Shop, where locals ease into the day, and dogs are welcome outside. Grab something strong and steady — a latte, a cold brew, maybe a pastry if someone at your table insists — and let your pup soak in the sidewalk scene. It’s an easy, unhurried way to wake up before heading for higher ground. Here are some other great coffee shop options to check out!

Windows Down, Ears Up

Today is about elevation: the scenic kind. Drive the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway, and set a course to an epic day with your pup.

Start with the Craggy Pinnacle Trail, a short climb that delivers sweeping ridgeline views. If you want a little water in the mix, explore the Graveyard Fields Loop, where creeks and waterfalls offer a refreshing, scenic break. Or drive up a little farther and enjoy the breathtaking views at Black Balsam Knob. Leashes are required.

South Slope Refuel

After your mountain morning, head back into town and aim for Asheville’s South Slope. Grab lunch or dinner at Wicked Weed Funkatorium, where barrel-aged sours and a full kitchen make it more than just a tasting room. Outdoor seating keeps things dog-friendly, and the energy feels lively without being overwhelming.

Day 3: Grand Grounds & Garden Rambles

Regal Morning Stroll + Tavern Lunch

Spend the morning exploring the outdoor grounds of Biltmore Estate, where leashed dogs are welcome. Walk the Lagoon Trail, a scenic, three-to-six-mile (depending on your route) paved, flat path connecting Antler Hill Village to the French Broad River. Finish off your Biltmore experience with a cozy lunch at the Estate's Cedric's Tavern, where pups are more than welcome at the covered outdoor patio.

Trails Through the Trees

Continue the day at the North Carolina Arboretum where forested trails weave through wooded hillsides and open meadows. The wide gravel paths make for easy wandering and steady pacing with plenty of great sniffing options for your fur bud. Leashed pets are welcome on the more than 10 miles of outdoor trails and garden paths, offering a sensory-rich experience of native plants, changing seasonal blooms, and quiet creekside spots where you can pause and take in the forested setting together.

Downtown Dinner Glow

As evening sets in, head back downtown for dinner at Twisted Laurel Downtown Asheville. Their outdoor patio is very dog-friendly and spacious, and the atmosphere makes it easy to linger a little longer than planned. Ask about their dog-friendly menu!

Day 4: Forest Paths & River Arts Energy

Bent Creek Morning

Ease into the day at Bent Creek Experimental Forest, a local favorite just minutes from downtown. Miles of shaded trails wind through rolling terrain, offering just enough elevation to feel adventurous without committing to an all-day trek. This is the kind of hike where conversation flows easily, and your pup sets the pace.

Taco Break

When hunger hits, make your way to Taco Billy. Their outdoor patio is a colorful, relaxed lunch stop, and the tacos bring bold flavors without fuss. It’s an easy, satisfying pause before the rest of your afternoon unfolds.

Creative Afternoon

From forest to studios, head to the River Arts District, where brick warehouses house working artists and creativity spills onto the sidewalks. Many studios welcome well-behaved dogs, and water bowls appear outside open doors. Stop by Wedge Brewing Co. for a quick cold one under their pet-friendly patio.

Brewery Wind-Down

As the day eases into evening, settle into a lawn chair at New Belgium Brewing, where river views and open space make it easy to relax. If you’re continuing the brewery circuit, Green Man Brewery, Highland Brewery and French Broad River Brewery are a few of our many, many breweries and cideries that welcome pups as part of the scene.

Day 5: A Black Mountain Morning & Downtown Finale

Coffee in Black Mountain

Begin your final day just 20 minutes east of Asheville in the charming mountain town of Black Mountain. Ease into the morning at Dripolator Coffeehouse, where the coffee is strong, the pace is slow, and pups are welcome outside. Grab a latte, claim a sidewalk table, and let your dog take in the small-town scene.

Shop the Side Streets

From there, wander Black Mountain’s walkable downtown. Independent shops line Cherry Street and State Street, and the vibe feels personal and unhurried. Find the kind of gifts that don’t exist anywhere else, and don't be surprised if shopkeepers greet your dog before they greet you.

Brunch, Black Mountain Style

When it’s time for something heartier, settle in at Open Oven Brunch & Bakery, where outdoor seating is dog-friendly and the menu leans into comfort food done right. Think scratch-made plates, warm pastries, and brunch that feels earned after five days of exploring.

Dinner Downtown

Close out the trip with dinner back in downtown Asheville at Posana, where the patio offers a relaxed, dog-friendly setting and a seasonal menu rooted in Western North Carolina farms. It’s elevated without being fussy — the kind of meal that feels celebratory but comfortable. Raise a glass and give a few scratches behind the ears.
