If you’ve been considering a visit to the Asheville area, you’re not alone—and you’re in good company.
Every year, visitors from around the world are drawn to this creative mountain city for its scenic beauty, vibrant arts, and distinct spirit. From walkable neighborhoods full of local, independent shops and restaurants to soul-stirring mountaintop moments, the Asheville area experience is designed to welcome—with heart, hospitality, and attention to safety.
Investing in a Safe & Welcoming Downtown
The heart of the city is supported by the Downtown Asheville Business Improvement District (BID)—a public-private partnership designed to enhance safety, cleanliness, and hospitality in the urban core. Through the BID, you’ll find street ambassadors who serve as visible, friendly guides, as well as supplemental cleaning crews who help ensure public spaces stay vibrant and welcoming for everyone.
The BID covers many of the areas most visitors explore on foot and represents Asheville’s shared commitment to cultivating a safe and enjoyable downtown experience for all. See an interactive map of the district here.
Safety Tips
The Asheville area is a place where most visitors feel inspired and at ease. That said, it’s a city—and traveling with awareness and common sense is always a good idea. We recommend a few simple practices, just like locals use every day:
- Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight.
- Stick to well-lit and well-populated areas after dark.
- Don’t hesitate to ask a business owner or local for help—they’ll likely be happy to point you in the right direction.
- The city’s most visited neighborhoods—including downtown, West Asheville, Biltmore Village, and the River Arts District—are known for their walkability, vibrancy, and strong community presence. These areas stay active into the evening with live music, dining, events, and shopping. During the day, parks and trails surrounding the city provide plenty of room to roam.
- The nearby towns of Black Mountain, Weaverville, Fairview and Woodfin are considered safe as well.
Public Safety & Community Resources
Asheville’s public safety partners—including the Asheville Police Department and Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office—play an active role in keeping residents and visitors safe. From foot patrols and bike officers to downtown engagement teams and community service efforts, there’s a coordinated approach to maintaining the city’s vitality and safety. Ongoing safety initiatives from the City of Asheville are also designed to improve the visitor experience while supporting community connection.
