Rough Ridge on the Tanawha Trail
Some views earn their name. Rough Ridge doesn't smooth things over; it takes you to the edge of one of the Blue Ridge's most dramatic drop-offs and lets the landscape do the talking.

Perched above the Linn Cove Viaduct along the Blue Ridge Parkway, this short but spirited hike on the Tanawha Trail delivers far more than its mileage suggests. Grandfather Mountain rises in full force overhead. The ridges of Pisgah National Forest ripple southward into the distance. And from the open rocky summit at 4,773 feet, the Piedmont stretches beyond the horizon in a view that earns a long pause.
The trail is part of the 13.5-mile Tanawha Trail, itself woven into the larger Mountains-to-Sea Trail — a path that has been connecting people to this ancient landscape for generations. But you don't need to hike all of it to feel it. Just a 0.3-mile walk from the Rough Ridge Overlook brings you to a boardwalk designed to protect the fragile, low-growing vegetation of this rare plant community. Keep climbing another 0.3 miles and the summit reveals itself, cables in place to help you reach the highest rocks where mats of Allegheny sand myrtle and turkey beard bloom white in season.
This is the kind of place that stays with you after you leave — deeply-rooted in the ancient geology of the Southern Appalachians, and always offering something new with the changing seasons.
What Can I Expect on Rough Ridge?
From the Rough Ridge Overlook parking area, the trail begins with a short ascent on log steps to a signed junction with the Tanawha Trail. Turn left toward Linn Cove. You'll cross an arching wooden bridge over a tumbling cascade — a good moment to pause before the climb begins in earnest.
The trail pushes upward through evergreens and over stone steps, past blueberry bushes and a distinctive stack rock formation on your right. At about 0.3 miles, the boardwalk begins — 200 feet of elevated walking designed to keep feet off the fragile plant life below. Standing here, the vista opens: the three loftiest summits of Grandfather Mountain tower above you, and the Linn Cove Viaduct threads along the Parkway far below. Climbers know the crags below as Ship Rock, one of the South's most sought-after rock-climbing destinations.
Continue 0.3 miles up rocky, well-graded switchbacks to the summit, where cable-lined paths guide you through low-growing mats of Allegheny sand myrtle and the tall white blooms of turkey beard. From the highest rocks — if you have the legs and the nerve — Mount Mitchell appears on the southern horizon and the NC Piedmont fills the eastern view in what feels like a near-vertical mile of landscape below.
When Is the Best Time to Hike Rough Ridge?
Rough Ridge is one of the finest spots in the Blue Ridge for early fall color — the exposed heath and shrub community turns vivid weeks before lower elevations. Spring brings wildflowers to the woodland approach, with rhododendron and azalea lining the trail. Summer offers long views and warm breezes at the summit. In winter, the open ridge can be cold and wind-whipped — dress in layers and check Parkway conditions before you go.
Weekday mornings are the quietest time to hike. This is a popular trail, especially on weekends and during fall foliage season, so plan accordingly.
How Do I Get There?
From downtown Asheville: Take I-40 East to US-221 North. Merge onto the Blue Ridge Parkway northbound and continue to Milepost 302.8. Rough Ridge is about 70 miles and 1 hour 29 minutes from downtown Asheville.
Note: The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 2-lane scenic road — allow extra time and check for seasonal closures at the NPS Blue Ridge Parkway website before heading out.
Alternative trailhead: Wilson Creek Overlook (Milepost 303.6) adds approximately 0.4 miles to the hike but offers a slightly different approach — beginning under the Parkway and climbing through boulder fields with spring wildflowers and towering trees.
