Healing mountain air put Asheville on the map more than 200 years ago. Turns out, we never stopped.

EatingWell has named Asheville its 2026 Best Wellness Town in America — and if you've ever stood at the top of a Blue Ridge summit, wandered through a River Arts District studio, or lingered over a locally-sourced dinner here, you already know why. This is a city that doesn't ask you to choose between movement and stillness, between nourishment and adventure. It offers both, and then some.

This recognition isn't just a moment; it's a through-line. Asheville has been drawing people here to restore, create, and rediscover themselves for generations. The mountains haven't changed. The spirit hasn't either. What's evolved is the depth and breadth of what's possible — from subterranean spas carved into the hillside to mountaintop yoga at sunrise, from salt caves tucked near downtown to cold plunges and cedar saunas designed to shake loose whatever you've been carrying. Wellness here isn't a trend. It's a way of life.

EatingWell's itinerary points visitors toward some of what makes this city so restorative. The North Carolina Arboretum — 434 acres of gardens, trails, and breathing room just off the Blue Ridge Parkway — is a grounding place to begin. The River Arts District, where hundreds of artists live and work alongside the ancient French Broad River, offers a different kind of renewal: the kind that comes from watching someone make something with their hands, trying it yourself in a glassblowing class or a pottery studio, or finding a piece of art that says exactly what you couldn't. Come back on a Second Saturday for the monthly Art Stroll, when the whole neighborhood comes alive.

Then there's Biltmore, with 8,000 acres of history, gardens, trails, and estate-raised food and drink that remind you just how deeply Asheville's roots run. And when the day winds down, downtown delivers: French Broad Chocolate, live music at The Orange Peel, and a walkable grid of locally owned restaurants that change with the seasons and the growers who supply them.

The wellness here runs deeper than any single experience. It lives in the way the city holds you. The mountains on the horizon. A conversation at a downtown counter that leaves you feeling more like yourself. The particular way adrenaline and stillness coexist without apology. We're honored by EatingWell's recognition, and grateful to the practitioners, chefs, artists, guides, and growers who make it true every day.
