Wiseman's View

Wiseman's View earns its name honestly. From two stone overlooks perched at roughly 3,400 feet, the ground falls away nearly 1,500 feet to the Linville River below, framed by Hawksbill Mountain and Table Rock rising across the gorge. It's one of the most dramatic views in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it takes less than half a mile of walking to reach.

The trail is a short, paved out-and-back from the parking area to the upper overlook, with a rougher spur continuing to a second, lower viewpoint. The upper platform is wheelchair and stroller accessible; the lower one involves a bit more uneven ground. Either way, most visitors are in and out in well under an hour.

What Can I Expect at Wiseman's View?

From the parking area, a paved path leads about two-tenths of a mile to the first stone overlook, where the Linville Gorge opens up below in dramatic fashion. Hawksbill Mountain's rock face and the flat top of Table Rock rise directly across the gorge, with the Linville River threading through dense forest far beneath your feet.

A short spur trail continues to a second overlook slightly further along, offering a different angle on the gorge without the crowds that can gather at the first platform. Neither overlook has guardrails along the full edge, so keep a close eye on kids and pets near the drop-offs.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Wiseman's View?

Because the overlooks face east into the gorge, afternoons tend to have the best light on the rock faces of Hawksbill and Table Rock. Fall color here can be spectacular, drawing steady traffic on weekends, so early mornings or weekdays are your best bet for a quieter visit. Wiseman's View is also a well-known spot after dark for catching the Brown Mountain Lights, a mysterious glowing phenomenon that's been reported in the gorge for over a century.

From Asheville, it's about 60 miles: take I-40 East to Marion (Exit 81), then Sugar Hill Road for about 3 miles to US-221 North. Follow US-221 north roughly 24 miles to the community of Linville Falls, turn right onto NC-183 for one mile to the Linville Gorge sign, then turn onto Kistler Memorial Highway (also called Road 1238 or Old NC 105) and continue 4 miles to the Wiseman's View parking area.

Note: The final four miles are unpaved Forest Service road with potholes and ruts that worsen after storms. A car with higher clearance handles it best, and GPS apps sometimes try to route drivers onto closed forest roads, so stick to the directions above rather than following navigation blindly.

Tip: There's a single restroom at the parking area but no water or visitor center, so bring what you need before you head out.

Know Before You Go

• The access road is unpaved gravel for the final four miles, with potholes that worsen after heavy rain; higher-clearance vehicles are recommended.
• Neither overlook has full guardrails along the cliff edge, so keep a close watch on children and pets.
• The upper overlook is wheelchair and stroller accessible; the lower overlook has rougher, uneven footing.
• There's a single restroom at the parking area, but no water or visitor center.
• No fee or permit is required to visit the overlooks (overnight backcountry camping across the gorge in the Linville Gorge Wilderness does require a seasonal permit).
• Leashed dogs are generally welcome in this day-use area of Pisgah National Forest.
• After dark, this is one of the best-known spots to watch for the Brown Mountain Lights.
• For a bigger day, Linville Falls is about 15 minutes away and makes for an easy pairing with this stop.
