Wortham Center for the Performing Arts: Three Stages, One Downtown Block
There may not be a bigger ticket in town when it comes to performing arts in Asheville than the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts, tucked into the heart of downtown at 18 Biltmore Avenue.
Here, three stages live under one roof, and each one has its own personality. The Diana Wortham Theatre is the big sister of the bunch, a 500-seat showcase with a state-of-the-art sound system, built to hold everything from major musical acts to original plays and dance productions. Just down the hall, the Tina McGuire Theatre keeps things close and intimate, seating up to 100 for music, comedy, or theatre that feels like it's just for you. And the Henry LaBrun Studio is the most flexible of the three, a 65-to-85-person space made for lectures, storytelling, and cabaret-style evenings. Big or small, loud or quiet, this is a place that holds it all.
NC Stage Company: Small Stage, Big Nights
Walk through the doors of NC Stage Company at 15 Stage Lane and you are in one of the most consequential little theatres in the South. With 120 seats and a commitment to professional, Off-Broadway style productions, NC Stage stages thought-provoking plays, from gripping dramas to character-driven comedies, that connect audiences to the shared human experience. This is a great anchor for a downtown date night, and tickets sell fast, so it is worth planning ahead.
Asheville Community Theater: Eight Decades of Homegrown Magic
For 80 years, the Asheville Community Theatre has been one of Asheville's most beloved creative traditions.
