In 2017, I moved across the state from Raleigh to the mountains of Asheville. My family and I were drawn to this being a smaller city surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of southern Appalachia. We also enjoyed Asheville’s diverse food offerings and the generosity of its eclectic, creative community.

I’m a part of a community called The Porch, founded by Irish storyteller, Gareth Higgins, which hosts transformative storytelling nights and festivals dedicated to the common good. I also serve on the board of Story Parlor, a cultural gem located in the heart of Asheville. The unique, multi-disciplinary arts space is dedicated to storytelling, creativity, and community. In May, the three-day Parlor Fest, celebrates Story Parlor’s third anniversary through a vibrant mix of workshops, panels, roundtables, and live performances. Join us!

When I’m most in need of creative momentum, besides drawing inspiration from my community, I do my best to get outside. Although we’re still rebuilding after Hurricane Helene, I was thrilled to learn recently that Asheville Botanical Garden has reopened to the public. It’s a great spot for a picnic and encountering local wildlife, and the ¼-mile trail through the garden is an easy walk for kids and grown-ups alike.

The WNC Nature Center is a long-time family favorite of ours and a fun way to get outside while also interacting with native wildlife—we never miss a chance to see the river otters' water-gymnastics!

In early June, I always try to make a trip up to Craggy Gardens, both for the breathtaking drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and for the blooming rhododendrons that splash the landscape and trails with color. [Editor’s note: Check the Blue Ridge Parkway website for the latest information on recovery updates and to see what’s open, mile by mile.].

We also have a wealth of welcoming spots to eat and drink alfresco—the rooftop bar at Hemingway’s Cuba in downtown Asheville is perfect for watching a mountain sunset while enjoying a drink and Foothills Grange serves up some of the best burgers and fries from their patio in Black Mountain. For a late morning brunch, Liberty House Cafe (my personal favorite) offers delicious sourdough pancakes and shady outdoor seating. Whether it’s for food or views, wherever I roam, I’m grateful for Asheville’s stunning natural scenery.
