Blue Ghost Fireflies — A Once-a-Year Encounter

Each May for just a fleeting few nights, the forests of Western North Carolina come alive with one of the rarest natural wonders in the world: the Blue Ghost firefly. Unlike the fireflies of your childhood, these ancient creatures glow with a steady, ethereal blue light, drifting low along the forest floor like something out of a dream.

Western North Carolina is one of the only places on earth where Blue Ghosts can be found — and Pinecrest Bed & Breakfast in Asheville's historic Montford District is your ideal home base for the experience.

Asheville Wellness Tours guides small groups of no more than 15 to 20 guests on a three-hour night hike through private conservation land in Mills River, just 45 minutes from Pinecrest. The experience is unhurried, mindfulness-based, and genuinely unlike anything else you'll do in Asheville.
