Mountain Mothers: A Special Guided Tour at Vance Birthplace
- Vance Birthplace911 Reems Creek Rd, Weaverville, NC 28787, USA, Weaverville,
Join us for “Mountain Mothers,” a special guided tour at Vance Birthplace that looks closely at the experiences of mothers and children in 19th-century Western North Carolina.
Explore the spaces where women like Mira Vance, Leah Erwin, and Elizabeth Hemphill would have had to navigate pregnancy and childbirth as we discuss maternal health and family dynamics in Southern Appalachia in the 1800s. This tour will cover both the joys and the dangers of childbearing in an environment shaped by slavery and war and with limited access to medical resources. Due to the sensitive and difficult nature of some of the topics we will explore, we recommend this tour for mature audiences only.
Register via Zeffy to reserve your spot! Tours are offered at 10am and 1pm and will run for approximately 75 minutes. Tickets are free for mothers and $5 each otherwise. Spaces are limited, so claim your spot today!
This special program is sponsored by the Mountain History and Culture Group. All proceeds go towards supplies and materials for educational programming at Vance Birthplace.
