Death and Mourning in the Mountains: A Special Guided Tour at Vance Birthplace

Join us at Vance Birthplace on Saturday, Oct. 31 for our new Death and Mourning in the Mountains tour to learn how the culture around death and funerary practices changed throughout the 1800s. Led by site staff, you’ll move through the historic grounds to explore how the Appalachian climate and cultures of Western North Carolina as well as technological advances in the funeral industry shaped the end of life in the 19th-century mountains.

Tours are offered at 10am and 1pm and will last approximately 90 minutes, including an optional hike to the old Vance family cemetery. Tickets cost $10.70 per person via Zeffy. Spots are limited, so we recommend registering in advance. Join us to learn, ask questions, and connect with the region’s history through this rarely discussed chapter of Appalachian history.
