Celebrate Black History

  • Redeemable: February 1 - February 29, 2020

To celebrate Black History Month, Engadine chooses to recognize the contributions made to African American travel by Victor and Alma Green, travel writers and publishers of The Green Book travel guide. In response to discriminatory Jim Crow laws, The Green Book was published between 1936 and 1966 as a listing of businesses Black travelers could depend on to serve their needs while traveling…motels, restaurants, bars, service stations, barbers, beauty salons and more. Numerous Asheville businesses were regularly featured in the directory as places where travelers would be welcomed and where they could feel safe while visiting the city. Thankfully, the days when such assurances were necessary are behind us. Today, Asheville welcomes all without prejudice. And its African American community proudly tells the story of its contribution to Western North Carolina through tours of historic neighborhoods and visits to significant places. We want to introduce you to this community’s heritage by way of these tours. Visit with us at Engadine during Black History Month to enjoy our hospitality and to learn more about African American history in Western North Carolina. Our package includes… • 10% Off of standard room or cabin rate (2-night minimum, double occupancy) • One hour walk around “The Block” With Hood Tour’s DeWayne Barton (requires inquiry for available date and time) • Admission to Asheville’s YMI Cultural Center (TBD based on exhibit schedule) • Introduction to the planned Asheville African American Heritage Trail • Calendar of events celebrating Black History Month in Asheville • “Green Book” sesources and services guide to locally owned African American businesses • A $25 gift certificate toward a future stay at Engadine Price: $125 will be added to your room or cabin rate • Call to reserve • Must be ordered at least 1 week prior to arrival • Available February 1-29. 2020 • Discount not available when booking through third party sites
