Asheville NC’s Fox & Beggar Theater is bringing a new concept to the performing arts: ritual cirque nouveau. Using dark, postmodern storylines to house feasts of visual delight onstage, the F&BT’s productions always showcase new forms of circus arts and acrobatics, dance, mask-and-puppetry, original music, technological integration, animation, and stunning set and costume design. Founded by Nat Allister in 2013, the F&BT is a visionary 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to bringing staggering theatrical productions to the Asheville region, building bridges across its artistic community, and providing for the training and education of performers, dancers, artists, designers, and others involved in its shows. Fox & Beggar’s mind-blowing creations have been performed to audiences throughout the eastern United States. The Citizen-Times called their critically-acclaimed production of Animalia: A Zoological Circus for the Stage “one of the largest local theater collaborations on an Asheville stage,” featuring ninety-seven cast and crew members. F&BT’s shows are attended by an audience as diverse as Asheville itself. Seasoned theater-goers and patrons of the arts, families and children, struggling young artists, tattooed punks, homesteaders, academics, spiritualists, dancers, travelers and tourists equally enjoy what this rare company brings to the stage. The F&BT introduces concept artists to bellydancers, video artists to costume designers, puppeteers to composers to acrobats. Both in the audience and behind the scenes, few theater companies extend across such a broad scope.
