The River Arts District of Asheville consists of a vast array of artists and working studios set in an urban scene of old factories and historical buildings. Everywhere you turn, art abounds - with creativity happening around every corner. Many studios are open every day, all year round. Visitors are encouraged to come explore artist studios and watch while they work, or meet the artists and discuss the creative process.
The River Arts District Artists work together for an exciting monthly event called “A Closer look” held the Second Saturday of the months May-Dec. It’s a great way to spotlight the diverse types of art that one can find in The River Arts District, as well as educate visitors on some of the intricate techniques involved in the artist’s creative process. Shop, Eat and Explore The River Arts District for the Second Saturday Events! Watch an artist as they weave a scarf, fire pottery, turn a wood bowl, or weave a basket. Pick out some handmade jewelry to wear during your trip. Have an amazing experience walking around The River Arts District, shopping for the perfect gift, and meeting our friendly and nationally acclaimed local artists.
Best time of the year to visit: The Bi-annual Studio Stroll. The whole district comes even more alive, artists open their studios & provide hand-on demonstrations. The Stroll is the first, largest, and most walkable tour of working artists' studios in the region. Open studios are scattered throughout 19 historic buildings along the French Broad River. There are artist's demonstrations and hands-on activities throughout the weekend. Getting to and around in The River Arts District is a breeze.
