The Riccardi Duo: Musical Satire at its Finest
Friday, June 22 - 8 p.m.- The Riccardi Duo. Satirical musical cabaret. $12 advance/$15 door
Everyone needs to laugh now and then in face of the absurdities of modern American life, and the hilarious progressive musical satire of the Riccardi Duo is guaranteed to provoke guffaws. Their brilliant show, not for the faint hearted or thin skinned, skewers every deserving target that wanders into their sights.
San Francisco musicians Sandy and Richard Riccardi started writing parodies and original songs together in 2008, poking fun at everything from politics to social norms, marital bliss to menopause. Over the past few years the Riccardi Duo’s witty lyrics, musical finesse and sly showmanship have earned them over three million views on their constantly updated YouTube channel and new fans wherever they play. The current political circus will of course provide fuel for their witty musical barbs when they bring their side-splitting cabaret-style show to the White Horse Black Mountain on Friday, June 22 at 8 p.m.
Sandy Riccardi is a versatile singer who tailors her voice to suit the various characters she inhabits onstage, whether crooning to “My Funny Vladimir” (apologies to Rodgers and Hart), spinning "The Ballad of Ryan Zinke" (remember Davey Crockett?) or the "Stormy Weather" rewrite dedicated to a certain notorious Stormy. Sandy is such a fine actress that it’s sometimes easy to miss the fact that the drollery is wrapped in a smoothly professional musicality polished by years of musical theater experience.
Her musical foil, husband Richard, deftly supports each satirical foray from the piano, displaying accompaniment skills that have landed him jobs backing artists as varied as Joel Gray, Mel Torme and Tom Jones. He’s also a regular with the Skywalker Orchestra, which provides music for movie soundtracks. Peter Leavy of “Cabaret Scenes” has called the duo “a musical version of SNL… a rib-tickling cabaret night out!”
The Riccardi Duo gained a high profile fan when Rosie O’Donnel named them her favorite new singing songwriter team. Their show is highly recommended for those who aren’t ashamed to laugh uncontrollably.
