Whether you are an immersion dyer, a printer, or an eco-printer, mordants are an essential element to the natural dye process. They can enhance or alter the colors achieved from a single dye. During this class we will investigate the best mordant practices for wool, silk, and cotton for both immersion dyeing and printing. The class will explore alum and iron. Titanium will be used to heighten the effects of certain dyes and tannins. We will compare pre-mordanting, post-mordanting, and middle-mordanting and dispel some of the “myths” about mordanting and why some practices can damage the mordant. At the end of the week, you will go away with a notebook of samples and a deeper understanding of how mordants can be utilized to control and enhance your own studio dye practice.
