Instructor: Georgia Deal
Make beautiful handmade paper luminaria in this two and one-half day workshop, where you will learn to make watermarks in handmade papers that will then be constructed into the luminaria. Thinking ahead to the holidays, special events, or weddings, workshop participants will design simple images to be used on paper screens that will then become translucent to light creating beautiful lanterns. We will work with cotton and abaca fibers for pulling sheets and learn a variety of watermark techniques. Friday evening will include demonstrations on use of the Hollander beater, pulp preparation, and pulling sheets of handmade paper. Instructions for making the watermarks will be introduced and followed up on Saturday to include pulling multiple sheets for the lanterns. Sunday’s class will focus on the construction and assemblage of the dried and pressed paper into Luminaria.
