J.D. Smith - Bass
The New England born bass player graduated from Johnson State College (VT) with a B.A. in Jazz Performance. Based in Asheville (NC) he has become a fixture in the music scene being the anchor for many Asheville projects including Phuncle Sam, Free Dead Friday and many more. His dynamic bass playing sets him apart as an artist in his genre.
Steve Kemble - Drums
Steve was born a percussionist, incessantly banging on his mother’s gumbo pots as soon as he could crawl. Steve moved to Asheville and is currently playing with Phuncle Sam, Chikomo Marimba, Curious George, Mande Foly, and inimitable Blue Paradox. When not playing music and building instruments, Steve likes to play in the mud and make homes and other stuff out of said mud. (See: MudStrawLove.com)
Phuncle Sam is Asheville’s own Dead~Centric “jam band”. Since their formation in 2004, Phuncle Sam has been firmly rooted in musical exploration. The band serves up inventive interpretations of Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead and many others. They have built up a faithful following by using an approach that respects the improvisational traditions of The Dead, while exploring what can happen when individual band members bring their unique influences and interpretations into the mix.
Fish & Friends
James Fisher ("Fish") has been writing songs and playing in bands since he was 13. Since moving to Asheville, NC in '95, he has had the good fortune of playing & performing with a wide variety of musicians. Fish & Friends is designed to get those friends together in performance.
