The play will be performed in repertory with Macbeth and all performances will be at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District. Dates for Pericles are September 3rd-12th, 25th, October 2nd and 8th, all on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. For safety, only those with tickets will be allowed at each performance. Tickets are available at montfordparkplayers.org and are, as always, FREE.
Shakespeare’s Pericles tells a tale of a prince who risks his life to win a princess, but discovers that she has a dark secret. Fearing his safety, he puts to sea, where he is shipwrecked. In Pentapolis he is saved and marries another princess, but she dies at sea giving birth to their daughter. The adventures continue from one disaster to another until the grown-up daughter pulls her father out of despair and the play moves toward a gloriously happy ending.
Director Jason Williams is excited to direct this fantastic story. “It's a big adventure, like the Odyssey, or Adventures in Babysitting,” he quips. “It has larger than life characters, shipwrecks, love, losses, reunions, pirates and a brothel. You can't ask for much more in a Shakespeare play.”
Williams is looking for the audience to become immersed in the grand storytelling style. “I'm looking to make the show lively, visually appealing, and creative. And adds, “Not only is it an adventure across the ancient middle east, but it will be an adventure through pop music styles from '50's until today.”
The cast from Macbeth, which is being performed on alternate evenings, will be pulling double duty by taking on roles here. Badi Mirheli is taking on Pericles himself, and will be joined by Dwight Chiles, Ariel Robinson, Anthony Antinora, Badi Mirheli, David Mycoff, Kai Strange, Kevin Norris, Mandy Bean, Mandy Bean and Matt Wade, among others.
Shakespeare’s Pericles was last seen at Montford way back in 2003, so this production is well overdue for the play’s rediscovery. s regularly presented at Montford, due to its continued popularity among Shakespeare aficionados and dilettantes alike. In rep with Pericles it gives us all a good reason to make our fall plans early.
