BRO Revels! 2022: "Hansel & Gretel"

The Blue Ridge Orchestra continues its 2022-2023 Season with its annual highlight of BRO Revels! This year, the program celebrates Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera, Hansel & Gretel, on December 3rd and 4th, in Lipinsky Auditorium on the campus of UNC Asheville. For this concert presentation, the BRO is honored to share the stage with UNC Greensboro’s Opera Theatre under the direction of David Holley.

Premiered in 1893, Engelbert’s famous opera has humble origins.  Originally, Engelbert was commissioned to arrange this fairytale as four folksongs for his two nieces. This work transformed into a singspiel with text written by Adelheid Wette. His comprehensive opera was birthed after boundless approval of the intimate Christmastime performance.

BRO Music Director, Milton Crotts, shares the inspiration for the UNC Greensboro collaboration...“I completed two music degrees at UNC Greensboro, whose music department had a great impact on my personal development and set the stage for a life filled with music. Many years later, I am thrilled to join musical forces with UNCG’s Director of Opera David Holley, and his wonderful Opera Theatre to present the BRO Revels! Hansel & Gretel.  It is a dream come true to stage this remarkable work complete with angels, gingerbread children, seven vocalists, and a full orchestra together on stage.”

Details: December 3 & 4, 2022, 3 pm both days in Lipinsky Auditorium at UNC Asheville. Tickets ($20 general admission, $15 members, $5 students). Please note that COVID-19 protocols apply. Mosaic Realty generously sponsors this event.
