The Penland Gallery presents Alchemy | Ideal Conditions, featuring contemporary works in glass by nationally recognized artist-innovators. Historically, alchemists were known for attempting to make synthetic gold, but their goals were far more ambitious: to transform and bend nature to the will of an industrious human imagination. The artists/alchemists in this exhibition are pushing the limits of their chosen material, moving the material in new directions, and inspiring the field of contemporary glass with their ingenuity. Penland School has played a significant role in the history of the American studio glass movement. Penland’s first glass studio was built in 1965 and since that time many glass artists from all over the U.S. and the world, have come to Penland to teach and to learn: in fifty-three years over 700 classes in glass have been offered, taught by almost 300 different instructors, and 28 resident artists in glass have worked in the glass studio at the Barns. The Penland Gallery and Visitors Center is one of the finest showcases for contemporary craft in the Southeast. Attracting thousands of visitors each year, the gallery exhibits and sells work by current and former Penland instructors, resident artists, and former students from around the country. A knowledgeable staff provides information about the school’s programs, the artists, and studios in the area. The John & Robyn Horn Gallery, Lucy Morgan Gallery, and the educational Visitors Center Gallery provide a remarkable destination for visitors to Penland School and the surrounding arts community.
