From the Press Release:

Montford Park Players, an Asheville theatrical tradition, is proud to announce their upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s A Comedy of Errors. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District, from May 7th through the 22nd on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. As per Governor Cooper’s current dictates, Montford Park Players will keep its audiences at 50% capacity, distanced and asked as appropriate. In order to keep it safe, only those with tickets will be allowed at each performance. Tickets are available at montfordparkplayers.org and are, as always, FREE.

The plot of A Comedy of Errors is typical of a Shakespearean comedy, involving mistaken identities, angry lovers, false arrests, and much, much confusion. Only this time it all occurs with TWO sets of identical twins! The play was first performed in 1594, after having been commissioned for a Christmas celebration. It may have been Shakespeare’s earliest work, but it has since become one of The Bard’s most-performed and most beloved comedies.

Director Mandy Bean has made the decision to set the play's events as taking place during the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918, with the dual purpose of lending some novelty to the proceedings, while also allowing her actors to wear masks, and still be fitting to their surroundings. Says Director Bean, “Of course, as with all theatre there are times that the audience will have to be willing to suspend disbelief. I hope they're as enthusiastic to come along for the ride as I am.”

Bean has assembled an expert cast and crew, as so many of the MPP regulars were champing at the bit to get back on stage after a canceled 2020. As the director said, “Along with our audience, we are seeking some joy in safe, live entertainment after a long, long year.”

The cast of A Comedy of Errors includes some faces familiar to MPP audiences and some newcomers, as well. Savannah Gibson, Jason Williams, Sophia Blankenship, and Matt Wade play some of the key roles, with the backstage support of Stage Manager Caitlin Lane, Sound Designer Scott Bean, and Director Mandy Bean doing triple duty by designing the sets and costumes.

A Comedy of Errors promises to be a rollicking good time for Shakespeare fans and first-time attendees alike. As Bean says, “It's a funny, short, lighthearted romp where everything turns out all right for everyone involved. As our introduction to 2021, what more could anyone want?”

Montford Park Players has been presenting Shakespeare and other classical works to the Asheville community since 1973 and has since grown to be one of Western North Carolina’s most beloved and well-known cultural attractions.
