In the depths of winter, American Folk will warm your soul with their 19th Annual Miniatures Show! Just in time for Valentine’s Day, these small but mighty works make the perfect gift for that special someone in your life who loves art or has long admired the artists American Folk represents.
There is much to love about a small work of art: often the smaller size requires more attention to detail and delicacy than larger pieces & as a result a palpable intimacy can be felt in the imagery and execution. A miniature painting tends to be quite affordable, so new collectors can purchase original art, and experienced collectors can find an exceptional piece to tuck into an established group. The artworks in this show are limited in size to 7 x 9 inches, with no restrictions on subject or spirit!
New work from the mind of Karl Mullen will be included in this year’s show: gestural figures on book pages and other ephemera, created from a multitude of paints, pigments, and inks. Miniature songbirds from woodcarver Ivy Billiot; tiny yet sweeping landscapes from painter Ellen Langford; stoneware critters from potter Michael Gates; and nature scenes with creatures both domestic and wild from painter Liz Sullivan and woodblock printer Kent Ambler are also among the work collected for this treasured show. The beauty of this long-standing tradition for the artists of American Folk is their awareness of it, year-round. If a scrap of wood, a bit of paper, or scoop of clay remains, it can spark an idea and find its way to this event.
To celebrate the opening of the 19th Annual Miniatures Show, American Folk will hold a reception on Friday, February 3rd from 5-8 PM. Guests to this free event can purchase locally created bouquets of flowers and commission an on-demand poem from Asheville’s own typewriter poet, Eddie Cabbage!
“What more perfect way to celebrate the opening of such a spirited show and Valentine’s Day than with poetry, flowers and beautiful art!” says American Folk owner Julia L. Mills.
