Ice cream is a comfort food often evoking memories of childhood summers. Building on these memories Kevin Barnes set out to redefine what ice cream could be. He did this by creating innovative flavor combinations, using local ingredients and sharing a playful attitude. Sourcing from local farmers means that a strawberry can be picked from the field in the morning mixed into ice cream that afternoon and scooped onto a cone the next day. Blue Cheese Caramel Swirl, Brown Sugar Bacon and Maple, Goat Cheese and Bing Cherry or Bourbon Vanilla are a few of the flavors that have a cult following.
Ultimate now has two stores in Asheville and its ice cream can be found in many local restaurants. Kevin lives just north of Asheville with his wife Lucia and their three boys Gabe, Eli and Sammy.
