Blacksmith Craft Crew Supervisor, Warren Wilson College

Maker: Other Maker

With a BA in Film and an MFA in Metals/Blacksmithing from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, Matt began teaching full-time in 2008, first as an Art teacher at a high school on an Indian reservation in Montana, and later, at a college prep school in Colorado. During this time, his creative work and teaching focused on exploring the expressive potential of forged ironwork when applied to decorative/ornamental and sculptural formats.

He joined Warren Wilson College as Blacksmith Craft Crew Supervisor and Visiting Artist in June 2017, and in 2018, the first cohort of the MA in Critical and Historical Craft Studies at Warren Wilson College, exploring what lies at the intersection of critical inquiry and material practice. His research interests include craft and it’s pedagogies, inquiry based curriculum design, and Blacksmithing practice and methodology, most recently, with a focus on toolmaking. At Warren Wilson, he continues to work as an educator, smith and student of craft alongside many who work to support an integrated, community focused blacksmithing program
