Rolling Stone Magazine once dubbed Asheville as "America's new freak capitol", but this weekend we're getting a visit from a New Orleans based group that may have us all reconsidering that notion. Asheville is no stranger to Vaudeville entertainment and you can get a big dose of it by heading to The Magnetic Field this weekend to see The New Orleans Bingo! Show.
Dressed in black, white and red like the leering faces on a good poker hand, the New Orleans Bingo! Show is a multimedia stage experience that includes original black-and-white silent films, aerialists, dancers, ingénues, clowns, audience interaction, bingo games, slapstick comedy and shady characters who remind you that every stage door opens into a dark alley.
The group is led by Clint Maedgen, a multi-instrumental singer, songwriter, composer and arranger. As full-time reed player and frequent vocalist for New Orleans’ world-renowned Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Clint has had the honor of recording and performing with such legendary musicians as Tom Waits, Steve Earle, and Dr. John, as well as contemporary stars the likes of Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Ani DiFranco and Andrew Bird. His most recent contribution is to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band/Del McCoury Band collaboration “American Legacies” album.
The show runs this weekend only from July 21-23. Tickets are $10 and available here.
