The magic of Dirty Dancing is set to return, this time on the small screen and possibly in the Asheville area! A planned three-episode TV miniseries, to air on ABC Networks, has applied for and received $4 million as part of the state’s N.C. Film and Entertainment Grant. While many details have yet to be revealed, the group of filming locations mentioned in the project’s application includes Asheville and other Western North Carolina places.

Despite being set in the Catskill Mountains of New York, the original 1987 film – now a classic beloved by many – was shot not far down the road at Lake Lure. The annual Dirty Dancing Festival in August celebrates the town as the locale behind many of the movie’s iconic scenes, and even includes a competition to recreate the famous lake lift.

Lionsgate, the production company behind The Hunger Games movies (the first of which also has Asheville ties), is heading up the remake, which is just the latest in a long list of Hollywood projects setting up shop in Western North Carolina.
