Celebrate Summer: Three Days of Reasons to Get Out & Go
By Cat Kessler
Mountain Sports Festival to be held May 22-24
What do you get when you bring family, food, gear, sports, music, beer and sunshine together on one spectacular weekend? The 15th Annual Mountain Sports Festival, of course!
For Asheville, this outdoors-oriented festival is as much a marker of the beginning of summer as the Memorial Day Weekend when it takes place.
For three whole days (May 22-24), West Asheville's Carrier Park teems with activity, from races, sports demonstrations and friendly competition, to live music and local cuisine, all along the banks of the French Broad River.
Highlights for the 15th year of the festival include CrossFit and yoga workouts, plenty of kid-friendly fun on climbing walls and in bounce houses, and a marketplace of WNC-based outdoor gear makers, showing off everything from hammocks to bike components to Bellyaks.
Topping the musical line-up this year are The Lee Boys, a funk and gospel group out of southern Florida who have headlined at Austin City Limits, Bonaroo, MerleFest and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Local acts including newgrass/folk group Fireside Collective and soul guitarist Lyric round out the schedule.
And new this year, a silent auction tent offers visitors a chance to bid on everything from stand-up paddleboards and zipline experiences to Asheville hotel packages and tour tickets.
