For more than 20 years, Virginia-based artist Michael Fitts has been loved for his remarkable trompe l’oeil paintings. Using reclaimed scrap metal as his substrate, Fitts creates convincing illusions of everyday objects floating in space above the beautifully distressed surfaces that have become a hallmark of his work. The subjects he renders with such convincing detail are varied and often whimsical: dented oil cans, toy robots, new crayons - tokens of the commonplace elevated to the status of fine art by his careful attention.
