Matthew Ritger Lecture, "Underwriting: Carceral Debt and Shakespeare’s Sonnets"

Apr 16, 2026
5:30 PM - 6:00 PM
  • UNC Asheville's Department of English will be hosting a free, public event in the early evening of April 16 at 5:30 pm with Dr. Matthew Ritger (Dartmouth College, Department of English), who will be giving a talk in Karpen Hall's Laurel Forum entitled "Underwriting: Carceral Debt and Shakespeare’s Sonnets." Dr. Matthew Ritger's lecture, the second installment of UNCA's Critical Perspectives lecture series this spring, will discuss the "corrective" and exploitative labor practices of the early modern prison, which gets its start in England during the 16th and 17th centuries at Bridewell Hospital, imparting a legacy that continues to trouble our contemporary American landscape of the 21st century.
