Fire, Ash, and Vapor: A one day atmospheric firing workshop at Odyssey ClayWorks
- Odyssey ClayWorks236 Clingman Ave Ext, Asheville, NC 28801, USA, Asheville,
Discover the magic of atmospheric firing in this immersive, one-day salt and soda firing led by Gillan Doty and Tyler Anderson. Designed for ceramic artists of all levels, this hands-on experience introduces you to the dynamic beauty of vapor glazing. Throughout the day we will cover surface design utilizing bisque slips and glazing techniques, as well as the fundamentals of kiln preparation, safe handling of materials, and a thorough explanation of the firing process itself. Students should plan to arrive with cone 10 bisque ware, and will receive approximately 1 cubic foot of space in Odyssey ClayWorks’ Salt and Soda kiln. This equates to a 12x24x6 inch kiln shelf’s worth of space each so we recommend smaller, more concise wares to maximize your volume in the kiln! Whether you’re looking to expand your technical skills or simply explore a new creative process, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the transformative power of fire, ash, and vapor in a supportive, collaborative, and fun environment.
