For the grand finale of Sufra Time, we're traveling to one of the most extraordinary places we've encountered yet—an isolated Arabian island so strange, beautiful, and biologically unique that it can feel less like visiting another country than visiting another world.

Join us at MochaBox Coffeehouse for Sufra Time: The Enchanted Island of Socotra, the climactic final evening of our eight-part journey through Arabian culture—and an immersive night of Arabian food, coffee, breathtaking imagery, history, science, humor, and storytelling.

For millions of years, isolation allowed life on Socotra to follow its own path.

The result is astonishing.

We'll encounter the iconic Dragon's Blood Tree, whose umbrella-shaped canopy looks almost extraterrestrial and whose remarkable resin has been prized for centuries. We'll enter an “alien garden” filled with plants found nowhere else on Earth. We'll discover an island that, despite its isolation, was connected to the ancient world through trade in precious resins and aloe.

We'll meet people who learned to organize life around the winds, preserving knowledge and identity across generations—including a distinctive language sustained through a powerful oral tradition.

And then we'll reveal perhaps the evening's biggest surprise:

Socotra may be far more connected to Appalachia than you would ever expect.

The Southern Appalachians are themselves one of North America's oldest and most biologically remarkable regions—a landscape where ancient mountains, isolation, and time created extraordinary pockets of life.

Socotra's rare plants meet Appalachia's wildflowers and salamanders. The Dragon's Blood Tree meets the memory of the American chestnut. Ancient island trade meets Appalachian ginseng and mountain herbs. Socotra's oral traditions meet Appalachian ballads and storytelling. Two isolated landscapes on opposite sides of the world reveal how place can shape not only the species that survive there—but the people, stories, and cultures that call them home.
