Asheville Gallery of Art

For more than four decades, Cynthia Brody has developed a distinctive artistic voice that invites viewers to look beyond first impressions. Her newest exhibition, Familiar/Impossible: Surreal Images of Women, will be on view at Asheville Gallery of Art from September 1–30, with an opening reception on Friday, September 4, from 5–8 p.m.

A self-taught artist, Brody combines digitally manipulated photographs with oil paint to create richly layered, surreal compositions. At first glance, her images appear familiar, but a closer look reveals unexpected visual transformations. Textures and forms that seem recognizable are often constructed from entirely different photographic elements, encouraging viewers to question what they see and discover new meanings hidden within each piece.
