Join us at MochaBox Coffeehouse for Sufra Time: Arabian Desert Living & Geology, an immersive evening of Arabian food, coffee, history, science, humor, and storytelling exploring a landscape where mountains rise from deserts, dunes can sing, floods appear seemingly from nowhere—and people have spent thousands of years learning how to thrive.

We'll begin with something astonishing happening beneath Arabia right now:

An ocean is being born.

The Arabian Peninsula is slowly pulling away from Africa as the Red Sea continues to open. Elsewhere, dormant volcanic fields reveal a fiery past. We'll venture into the legendary Empty Quarter, where enormous dunes stretch toward the horizon, and into dry wadis where a rainstorm miles away can suddenly send a wall of water racing through the desert.

But geology is only half the story.

The real story is what people learned to do about it.

We'll discover how generations learned to read water, stars, weather, and terrain; why traditional clothing is actually an ingenious response to desert physics; how families transformed steep mountainsides into productive terraces; and how some of the world's most prized honey can carry the flavor of a particular landscape.

Then we'll cross an ocean—and discover that Appalachia understands more of this story than you might expect.

Ancient Arabian mountains meet the ancient Blue Ridge. Desert flash floods meet Appalachian mountain floods. Yemeni terraces meet hillside farms.
