  • All about Soils: Understanding and Improving Soils of the Southern Appalachians with Dalton Buchanan $35.00

    Saturday, May 30 2026, 1:00-3:00pm

Meet at the Asheville Botanical Garden Visitor's Center (indoor class)

Healthy landscapes start with healthy soil, yet soil is often the least understood part of gardening and landscaping. This class explores where soils come from, why they vary so much even within a single yard, and what makes soil function well for plants. Participants will learn how soil texture, structure, organic matter, and biology influence plant health, drainage, and erosion, along with practical approaches to soil improvement, amendments, mulching, and planting strategies suited to our mountain region. The session will also cover soil testing, common soil-related problems, and practical tips for working with slopes, clay soils, raised beds, and wooded landscapes common to Western North Carolina.

Dalton Buchanan is a soil scientist with the North Carolina Division of Soil and Water Conservation and has over ten years of experience evaluating soils for agriculture, conservation, and land management across Western North Carolina. He works with farmers, landowners, and conservation partners on soil health, erosion control, and sustainable land use practices. Dalton is passionate about helping people better understand their soils and apply practical solutions to improve plant and landscape success. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking and exploring the mountains he serves professionally.
