Here are Asheville's 2026 James Beard Finalists

Article last updated 04/01/2026

Asheville has always cooked with a heart shaped by farmers, makers, and chefs who believe food is both craft and community. In 2026, that creative energy was once again recognized on the national stage, with two Asheville standouts named James Beard Award finalists on March 31. The James Beard Foundation will announce winners during a live event in Chicago on June 15.

Often called the “Oscars of the food world,” the James Beard Awards celebrate the people and places shaping how America eats. For Asheville, these honors reflect something locals already know: this is a city where global flavors meet Appalachian roots, and where restaurants feel less like businesses and more like shared tables.

Chai Pani Restaurant Group (Chai Pani + Botiwalla)

The husband-and-wife team behind Chai Pani and Botiwalla has spent the past decade redefining how Asheville experiences Indian cuisine using bold spices, street-food energy, and an atmosphere that feels more festival than fine dining.

Their recognition as Outstanding Restaurateur finalist honors more than restaurants. It celebrates a philosophy: that food should be playful, accessible, deeply rooted in culture, and shared generously. Whether it’s a buttery uttapam, a spicy vada pav, or a late-night kati roll, their kitchens have become landmarks of Asheville’s culinary identity.
