Blue Ridge Parkway Scenic Detour
Date Posted: Oct 15, 2009
On Wednesday, October 14, 2009, Blue Ridge Parkway officials announced an emergency closure of the park motor road south of Asheville, citing a potential rock slide area. The parkway will be closed from Bad Fork Valley Overlook at milepost 399.7 to the Wash Creek Valley Overlook at milepost 401.1 The Pisgah Inn will remain open and will be accessible from NC-276 at Wagon Road Gap.
The good news is that detouring around the closed section involves a 15-mile stretch of Highway 276, home to secluded waterfalls and the Cradle of Forestry, America's first forestry school featuring guided walks, historic buildings, living history interpreters, outdoor fun, antique equipment, an old logging train, and the Forest Discovery Center.
