Art in Bloom Ikebana Demonstration

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is celebrating its 3rd annual Art in Bloom, an art and flowers show, from June 18-21. In addition to the art show with accompanying floral interpretation by both Ikebana and traditional floral designers, a different event is planned each day. The Friday, June 19, daytime event is an Ikenobo Ikebana demonstration by Emiko Nishiwaki, with commentary by Terri Ellis Todd. Scheduled at 2 pm, attendees will be treated to afternoon tea and refreshments; locally crafted pottery tea sets by the Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio potters will be available for purchase during the tea.

5th Annual Festival of Native Peoples and Cherokee Art Market

Tribes from all over the Americas gather in Cherokee in a cultural explosion of song, dance and ceremony. Past festivals have drawn participants from the Alvtiiq in Kodiak, Alaska, the Hopi of Arizona, the White Mountain Apache, and the Cherokee of North Carolina.

Folkmoot Festival 2009

The 2009 Folkmoot Festival will take place on July 16 – 26 in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Folkmoot is one of only three international folk festivals in the United States, where over 300 dancers and musicians from countries throughout the world travel to Waynesville, North Carolina for a two-week show. Traditional performances from nearly a dozen countries will take place throughout nine counties during the eleven-day festival. Held for 25 consecutive years, Folkmoot is North Carolina’s Official International Festival and has been designated “One of the Top Twenty Events in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society.

Festival of Native Peoples & Cherokee Indian Art Market

This year our annual gathering of tribes from throughout the Americas takes its rightful place as the finest showcase of native dance, art, and culture in the southeast. The Festival of Native Peoples is an exposition of non-competitive dance, storytelling, and song performances expressing the collected history, culture, tradition, and wisdom of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Entertainment throughout the day will include a replica of an Apache dwelling with audience participation, hoop dancing, flute music, and Cherokee storytellers. Other performers include the Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai, Hopi Senom Dance Group, Phoenix, Arizona - Ambassador's of the State of Arizona and the Yellow Bird Apache champion dancers who have been performing for presidents and heads of state for 22 years. The festival will also play host to one of the southeast’s largest Native American art markets. The Cherokee Indian Art Market will feature over fifty nationally recognized, juried craftspeople and artisans from around the country displaying and selling their handmade traditional and contemporary works of art ranging in price from $10 to tens of thousands of dollars. Artists will also demonstrate techniques passed down from generation to generation.

Mountain Dance & Folk Festival

37th Annual Village Art & Craft Fair

Mt. Mitchell Craft Fair

Celebrating its 53rd year, the fair hosts more than 250 juried crafters from across the country that show and sell their own beautifully handcrafted work. Asheville’s 1st Annual Rastafarian Ancient Living Arts and Kulture Festival

The 1st Annual Rastafarian Ancient Living Arts and Kulture Festival (RALAK Fest), presented by the Black Mountain Asheville Rastafarian Collective (Black Mountain ARC), is to be held on September 13th, 2009 at the Lake Eden Events Site in Black Mountain, NC. RALAK is also a celebration of The Ethiopian (2002) New Year, which is actually two days before on Sept 11th. Tickets cost $30 and are available online at www.RALAKfest.com. RALAK is an all day educational, interfaith, music and cultural event that will feature speakers from a vast majority of religious sects, local civic leaders, representatives within our community and national educators. This is a family friendly event with a kid’s village, live music, and local artisans. The day will begin with spiritual blessings from various cultures as well as the United States and Ethiopian National Anthems. There will also be a moment of silence to honor oppressed peoples well as victims and casualties of all wars. Other activities include educational videos, Native American and African songs and drumming, Irish bag pipes and dance, as well as Nyahbinghi- the rallying call of Theocracy for humanity in the Divine force of truth and rights. Speakers, including international educators, will be represented from many walks of life and faith, such as Carlo Hawk Walker (Native American Sun Dancer) and Dr. John P. Homiak (Curator of the Rastafari exhibit “Discovering Rastafari” & Director of Anthropological Archives at the Smithsonian International Museum of Natural History), Queen Mother Moses, George Rose (Dejazmatch of Baltimore Maryland, legal advisor to the Rastafari cause), and Debra Kiliru-Liontree (co-director of Motherland International Relations). 2009 Downtown After Five: September 18

Produced by the Asheville Downtown Association, Downtown After 5 is celebrating its 21st year. The concert series is the 3rd Friday of the month May through September on North Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville. Music starts at 5:15pm and goes until 9pm. Downtown After 5 is committed to reducing its carbon footprint featuring biodegradable food and beverage containers, compost and recycling stations, a solar-powered stage and complimentary bike corral. Art in Autumn Arts & Crafts Festival

The third annual Art in Autumn Outdoor Arts and Crafts Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2009, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Weaverville. The festival will feature over a hundred juried artists and craftspeople, as well as an exciting array of food and live music.

Brewgrass Festival

Each year in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we gather over 30 American breweries to showcase more than 100 different beers. We add a great lineup of national and regional bluegrass musicians. We also feature a variety of area food vendors and plenty of water.
