New at Biltmore House: Never-before-seen rooms open April 4

This year, springtime at Biltmore takes on a whole new meaning when a suite of four never-before-seen bedrooms opens in Biltmore House to visitors for the first time on April 4. These rooms provide a deep and revitalized connection between the two generations born at Biltmore and the visitors who come here to see George Washington Vanderbilt’s 8,000-acre estate, a National Historic Landmark. Coinciding with the start of Biltmore’s 24th annual Festival of Flowers (April 4-May 17), the opening of the new rooms represents a major milestone in Biltmore’s history, and one of the most revealing opportunities to date for Biltmore to tell the Vanderbilt family story. Restored to its original splendor, this suite offers visitors the first opportunity to fully see the house as a family home and the Vanderbilts as parents. The Louis XV Room itself is perhaps the true heart of Biltmore. It served as birthplace of George and Edith Vanderbilt’s only daughter, Cornelia, in 1900. Years later, it was where Cornelia delivered her own two sons, George Henry Vanderbilt Cecil and William Amherst Vanderbilt Cecil in 1925 and 1928, respectively. When guests tour through the suite, they will realize like never before that Biltmore was much more than a magnificent house when Vanderbilt opened it on Christmas Eve 1895. It was a home, alive with family, friends and children. Biltmore’s team of curators, conservators and craftsmen spent years researching and sourcing materials from around the globe to authentically restore a part of Biltmore House that’s been closed to visitors for nearly 100 years.

"ECO-ART: Artists Respond-Reclaim, Reuse, Recreate" opens May 8th at Hand in Hand Gallery

On Friday, May 8, Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock will open an exhibition entitled “ECO-ART: Artists Respond – Reclaim, Reuse, Recreate.” An opening reception will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The show will run through Sunday, July 5. Hand in Hand Gallery is pleased to be partnering with Environmental and Conservation Organization of Henderson County (ECO) for this event in an effort to raise awareness and funds for their local efforts. This “green” art exhibition will explore the artist’s response to the world and times in which we live. As creative alchemists, they work daily to transform materials and elements into something beautiful, useful and meaningful. Few artists still mine ore as the first step in forming a gold pendant, dig a riverbank of clay for a pottery mug, or harvest trees for a rocking chair. However, every artist develops sources for their material needs and the inspiration for their creations within the context of their own world. An increased awareness of our impact on the limited resources of our earth home redefine our daily lives, so too, it must affect our creativity. Artists have been invited who: Recycle, reclaim and reuse materials, ideas, imagery, parts, techniques Reduce their energy needs required for their art, or their use of highly refined or toxic materials Recreate the spirit of alchemy, transforming available materials Revitalize outdated artwork and concepts with a fresh approach Over 50 local and regional artists working in most mediums will be represented.

Tradition/Innovation: American Masterpieces of Southern Craft & Traditional Art

Tradition/Innovation: American Masterpieces of Southern Craft & Traditional Art, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, is intended to acquaint Americans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy. “Through this exhibit and the online and educational materials that we’ll present, we want to introduce people in the South to master artists and craftspeople living and working in their own communities,” said Gerri Combs, Executive Director of the Southern Arts Federation. “The incredible diversity of these individuals and the objects they create will give people a new window into the traditions of the South’s many cultural communities and the vibrant contemporary craft movement in the region.” Among the artists in the exhibit are six recipients of the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship, the country’s highest honor for traditional artists. The combination of contemporary craft and traditional art in this exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to explore the "threads" between two different approaches to creating artwork, and also to compare the approaches of traditional and contemporary artists.

Meet author Tim Josephs as he presents his book, A Camouflaged Fragrance of Decency, a collection of humorous and truthful stories that captures the absurdity of everyday life. "A pop starlet fresh out of rehab, an insurance company middlemanager with an unhealthy appetite for baked goods, a high school sophomore with spectacular facial hair -- all sorts of American oddballs turn up in Tim Josephs' sly, off -kilter, very funny fiction. To read these short stories (some of them very short indeed) is to enter a strange territory where Raymond Carver meets The Onion. Brevity, soul, and lots of wit." - Jody Rosen, Slate Magazine
