Locals Reveal Budget Fall Things to Do

Free and Cheap Fall Things to DoComing to the Western North Carolina mountains in the fall doesn’t have to break the bank. Below are some ideas for saving a little green while in search of a little red, yellow and orange.
  • Pack a picnic and head to the Blue Ridge Parkway. No matter when you come to town during fall, you’re sure to find spectacular color along the parkway. Stop at one of the many overlooks, grab the picnic basket and take a hike to a great spot.
  • If you want to be outdoors, the Asheville Botanical Gardens is free year-round. The North Carolina Arboretum with trails and seasonal gardens has no parking fee on Tuesdays and on other days, the parking fee to enter is minimal. The Appalachian Trial runs through Western North Carolina.
  • Embark on a self-guided tour. If you’re an art lover, visit the River Arts District to see local artists in action and buy directly from the artist.
  • Take in a show. The theatre scene begins to heat up in the fall as well with reasonable ticket. And for an added bonus while enjoying dinner or a pint, check the local music scene to see where the area’s talented performers will be headlining.
  • Come to town Sunday through Thursday. Coming midweek means less crowds which also means less traffic and shorter wait times at local restaurants.
