The primary museum of general history in Buncombe County, with exhibits that reflect the pioneer history of Western North Carolina, interpreted in photos and artifacts from the Swannanoa Valley, east of Asheville.

Directions:

Off I-40: Take exit 64; go north into Black Mountain; turn left at State Street (State Road 70); museum is in former firehouse; 2nd block on left, between Black Mountain Center for Arts and Dripolator Coffeehouse.

Times/Hours: Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays.

Season: April through October
