Biking

The mountains of Western North Carolina offer exciting challenges to mountain bikers of every skill level.

Cycling in AshevilleWhether you want to quietly pedal along the lanes of one of our small towns or take your mountain bike over a challenging trail through the Pisgah Mountains, Asheville's varied terrain makes it an excellent place to bicycle.

Beginners and experts alike love the 40 miles of single-track trails at Tsali Recreation Area, where cyclists venture along the shores of Fontana Lake to points such as Windy Gap Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Bent Creek also lends itself to rough terrains and off-the-beaten pathways.

With great trails and cool weather, Men's Journal magazine designated both areas as prime destinations for both leisure and competitive adventure. Visitors can embark on group rides, which are loosely organized by the many bike shops in the region along with the many outfitters who supply bikes for rent.

Discover over 70 different routes in Buncombe County and print out pocket-sized cue-sheets for your cycling adventure. You can find other trails in the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests. Several trails in and around town have varied hours and access times, so contact the Asheville Visitor Center for more information.

The following Asheville-area outfitters and guides supply road and mountain biking equipment and can point you in the direction of Western North Carolina's best riding trails:
