Not Your Kids Canteen

Chances are the kids are spending a lot of time at the canteen - arguably one of the most popular places at summer camp - trying to decide which soda or candy bar to buy. Sugary snacks may not be your idea of prime shopping, so why not try out Asheville's shops and galleries, a grown up version of the camp canteen?

• In downtown Asheville, stop in the Grove Arcade, a beautiful and notable piece of architecture that first opened in 1929 and now holds unique eateries and retailers. Mountain Made, is just one shop in the arcade to offer distinctive crafts and gifts.
• Also in downtown, the Woolworth Walk features the artwork of nearly 150 local artists. It also features a retro counter where you can grab a cool treat before heading out for more shopping.
• Spend a day walking along the cobblestone streets of Biltmore Village, located at the entrance to the Biltmore, where a cluster of 1900s-era homes now hold one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops. Stop in Blue for handcrafted fine jewelry. The New Morning Gallery feature stunning furniture, pottery, jewelry and glasswork. The Compleat Naturalist Nature Store and Gallery has wildlife art and hiking gear and guides. The Olde World Christmas Shoppe proves Christmas isn't just in December.
• Don't forget The Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway in east Asheville, especially if you are a fan of the North Carolina's mountain crafting tradition. From here, spend some time soaking in the views along one of the nation's most popular roadways.
• And, OK. We all know sugary treats can't be resisted, no matter how old you are. So for some old- and new-fashioned candy - remember Squirrel Nut Zippers? - by the pound, head to Mast General Store, which also boasts an impressive selection of outdoor gear, home wares, gifts and clothing for men and women.
