Before Prohibition, the number one wine producing state in the nation wasn’t California, but one of the original 13 colonies – the State of North Carolina. The lush valleys of the NC Mountains are now on a fast track rebound a century later. In fact, America’s most visited winery, Biltmore Winery, is located here.
Facts:
- In the last couple of decades, NC has worked its way back up the ranks, becoming 12th in wine production and 10th for grape production.
- It also boasts the most visited winery in the U.S. with more than one million visitors stopping by the Winery at Biltmore Estate.
- Biltmore Estate Winery produces 75,000 cases of red, white, blush and sparkling wines each year.
- The Estate’s Sauvignon Blanc was just named “Best U.S. Sauvignon Blanc” by the Beverage Tasting Institute’s World Value Wine Challenge in the category of “Top 12 wines under $10.”
- Biltmore Estate’s Château Biltmore Methode Champenoise Blanc de Blanc was featured at a White House dinner.
- Ten new wineries are expected to open by December 2007 and the number of NC wineries has doubled since 2002.
- The Market Place, Flying Frog Cafe, Left Bank, Bouchon, Zambra and Savoy feature extensive wine lists as well as past winners of Wine Spectator’s “Award of Excellence” Horizons at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa and Gabrielle’s at Richmond Hill Inn.
