Frommer's Names Asheville a Must-See in 2007

Asheville Among 12 Top Global Destinations

ASHEVLLE, N.C. (Jan. 22, 2007)—  Asheville has joined the likes of Tokyo and Zurich as a must-see destination for world travelers, at least according to Frommer's, publisher of a series of highly acclaimed travel guides.

The company recently announced its top 12 world travel destinations for 2007. As the only destination in the Southeast, Asheville is recognized for its thriving arts, culture, and gay & lesbian scene.

"This year, editors at Frommer's Travel Guides and Frommers.com scoured the globe and polled our stable of authors and experts to identify a mix of surprising, thriving, or emerging travel destinations," said Kelly Regan, editorial director of Frommer's.

On the coveted “must-see” list, Asheville's art-filled culture and music scene shares billing with the Carribbean gateway of Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands, and with the ancient city of Krakow, Poland. Closer to home there's the Portland, Ore. and Glen Canyon, Utah, recognized for, like Asheville, excellent outdoor adventure opportunities.

“Asheville has been drawing literati and celebrities who had gravitated to New Orleans as a hub of culture,” according to the statement released by the guidebooks company. The statement also praised the area as being “great for driving tours and shopping trips to numerous crafts and pottery shops,” citing the Blue Ridge Parkway being nearby.

Ranked alongside Asheville, the other 2007 standout destinations are: Krakow, Poland, followed by Tokyo, Japan; Minneapolis, Minn.; Panama; Ethiopia; Portland, Ore.; Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands; Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada; Glen Canyon, Utah; Zurich, Switzerland; and Portland, Maine.

Asheville has been recognized for its splendors by dozens of reputable outlets in recent years, ranging from the recent designation by Outside Magazine as the number one whitewater town in the country in Aug. 2006 to ranking second in the small cities and towns category in AmericanStyle Magazine’s  ninth annual “Top 25 Arts Destinations” reader’s poll in June 2006.
