Q&A with Geocaching Expert "OzGuff"
You don’t have to be Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean or any of his fellow pirates to go on a treasure hunt. From May 20 to June 23, 2008 just come to Asheville with your GPS unit and start hunting. By following clues and solving a puzzle, you’ll have the chance to find incredible bounty from some of the Asheville area’s most well-known organizations.
And if you’ve never been geocaching before, it’s the perfect time to start. You may discover a new hobby. Check out our intro to geocaching section for more information. Western North Carolina is a great place to start geocaching - the thousands of caches hidden here will take you to incredible mountain vistas, waterfalls and other interesting places.
Below are the prizes that will be available for treasure hunters that stay in one of the participating area accommodations. Happy AsheCaching!
Arts Cache
Strolling down by the French Broad River, you’ll find artists specializing in multiple media working side by side in renovated studios. The renowned River District Artists of Asheville have donated some incredible items for you to uncover. We wouldn’t dare hide these amazing pieces of art out in the open. Inside the cache box, you’ll find a voucher with instructions as to how to redeem it and get the treasure.
- May 20: Contemporary Paintings by Genie Maples – $200 towards anything in studio
- May 27: Laurie McCarriar/Gingerprint – $100 towards anything in studio or on Web site.
- June 3: Jonas Gerard – $150 towards any original art
- June 10: Desert Moon Designs – $75 toward any Desert Moon Designs creation AND Perez Art Studio – $75 towards anything (pottery, sculpture or painting)
- June 17: Maria Andrade Troya – $75 towards pottery.
Couples/Romance Cache
The Blue Ridge Mountains are the perfect setting for a little one-on-one time with the person you love. Take the day and hunt for treasure together. Then reward yourself with one of the romantic prizes found in the cache from tickets to a play to a culinary tour to a couples massage at a spa recently awared the 2007 Best Spa for Men and Best Spa Interior Design in the SpaFinder Reader's Choice Awards.
- May 20: Biltmore - Two tickets to the estate where you can explore their 8,000 acre backyard. ($102 retail value)
- May 27: French Broad Rafting Expeditions – 9 mile whitewater rafting trip for two with lunch provided. Trip takes you through class I-IV rapids and takes 5-6 hours. ($140 retail value)

Outdoor-Inspired Cache
When you visit the Asheville area, you’re able to take advantage of the Blue Ridge Mountains and enjoy countless outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, rafting and many more. But, did you know that the mountains have inspired the founding of outdoor adventure gear companies? These companies use the Blue Ridge as testing ground for incredible gear. Shopping Cache
Strolling around the Asheville area, you’re sure to uncover treasures to take home with you at area shops. One place to find many under one magnificent roof is the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The Grove Arcade is filled with boutiques, regional crafts, delicious restaurants and even an ARTS & Heritage Gallery.
