Author Suzy Barile will present her book, Undaunted Heart: The True Story of a Southern Belle and a Yankee General. Barile’s work chronicles the true and controversial affair between Ella Swain, daughter of then UNC-Chapel Hill President David Swain, and Union General Smith Atkins. Barile’s impeccable research separates fact from myth and balances her narrative with Ella’s personal and revealing letters to her parents. A former newspaper reporter and editor, Barile teaches journalism at Wake Tech Community College in Raleigh.
